This collection of autobiographical poems won the Old Seventy Creek Poetry Prize in 2009. The poet mainly addresses members of his family, primarily his wife. The poems are detailed memoirs, filled with names of relatives and friends, places, and events, and they are mostly written in the present tense. They include complicated analyses of his daughters' moods, family dynamics, and recollections of good and bad times that never really come alive for the reader. Though the poems are laid out in stanzas they read like prose, and one of the most successful works in the collection is pure prose: "My Father, the Swimmer." In this work, Horn offers a straightforward, simple, affecting remembrance of his father's life as seen through his son's eyes, particularly his love of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. This memoir contains sparkling, tactile imagery that makes it stirring: the father's white skin in the moonlight, the naugahyde hospital chair Horn sits in after his father's stroke, "the soul of your language shattered to atoms by the stroke." The six poems that make up the first section of the book, "The Smell of Time," are more successful than the rest, particularly "The Tel," in which the poet's dream of a tel gradually transforms into a woman's face, with both objects timeless in their beauty and mystery. I'm stunned by how fully the poems in this book come alive and bring us instantly and completely into the moment through the use of emotionally evocative and visceral details They are powerfully reminiscent of Nabokov's memoir, Speak Memory. We feel as if each of the moments Bernard Horn captures here are happening right now, and we are there with him. The family memoir poems are especially deeply moving - we both travel through time with the author and yet come to feel that time is in some way unreal because each of those moments he captures are so fully evoked that they are still occurring right NOW.
The family in the poem may have grown up and scattered, but we find ourselves convinced that they are still sitting around the table on a "snow day." These are the moments we yearn for once they have passed though we can so often fail to realize their value in the moment. The suthor's daughters may be grown and pursuing their own lives far away but Horn's poems convince us that he fully noted and appreciated the moments he shared with them as he lived them and has thus never lost them.
They evoke for me a scene from Thornton Wilder's Our Town, in which a young woman who has died is given the opportunity to come back and relive a day. She is warned to choose an "ordinary" day, and she does, but finds herself horrified at the way we "don't look at each other," connect, and experience the miracles of being alive during such ordinary days. Horn makes us believe not only that he was fully alive and aware in those moments, but that fully living them has allowed him to fully relive them as well. His poems are a powerful reminder to all of us to LIVE the ordinary moments of our lives in all dimensions rather than just putting in time.
